FAQ
Some helpfull tips to get the right gear for your diver
When will ordered items be received?
- eLearning codes, and instructions will be emailed within two business days of purchase, to the email address provided at checkout.
- We are not able to ship other items. Campers will pick up their orders on the second day of camp.
Why should we order gear from your site? What does it mean for equipment to be 'designed for scuba diving'?
We are able to provide gear and materials at competitive prices because we are selling exclusively to our campers. Our site offers trusted, high quality products that are designed for scuba diving. Not all masks, snorkels, and fins are created equally. Equipment designed specifically for scuba diving is made of high quality materials that can withstand the rigors of the underwater environment for prolonged periods. 'Sport' equipment designed for surface water sports or snorkeling may be made of inferior materials that can break or scratch easily and lack the comfort necessary for prolonged use. Most snorkel sets are not suitable for scuba diving.
What items are required for specific courses?
- For all SCUBA Diving courses we require students own the following gear designed for scuba diving:
- Mask
- Snorkel
- Fins
- Booties (for open heel fins)
- Logbook (included with materials for the Scuba Diver course)
- Course Textbooks/Materials (for the following classes)
- Scuba Diver (eLearning required).
- For SKIN Diving courses we do not require gear campers to own personal gear. However, personal gear is encouraged.
-
The following scuba courses require the purchase of the textbook/eLearning package associated with the course. The eLearning curriculum must be completed prior to camp.
- 105 NAUI Open Water Scuba Diver
- 109 NAUI Rescue Scuba Diver and First Aid/CPR
- 110 NAUI Master Scuba Diver
- 114 Recreational Avelo Diver (RAD)
How do I know which mask to pick?
The most important consideration when selecting a mask is fit and comfort. All of our masks feature advanced mask skirt technology which allows for superior comfort and seal. Strongly consider the fit information for each mask below when making your selection.
We offer both single and double lens masks. Single lens masks generally offer a wider, less obstructed field of view than a double lens mask. A double lens mask is usually lower volume making it somewhat easier to clear. We also offer masks with both clear and opaque skirts (the part of the mask which rests against the face). Opaque skirts can restrict the light entering in though the skirt, minimizing reflections that can obscure vision. Some people who feel claustrophobic when they wear a mask, prefer a clear mask skirt.

My camper wears glasses; can they wear them under their mask?
- Glasses do not fit under masks. However, we offer prescription lenses that fit into the Freedom Ceos Mask. Select "Both" below the Ceos color choices and then scroll to your campers’s prescription strength in each eye. We offer both positive and negative lenses, in 0.5 diopter increments, starting at 1.5. If your camper wears contacts they can be worn with a non prescription mask. For any concerns or questions regarding prescription lenses, contact us at diving@gdi.org.
What if I change my mind or need to cancel an order?
- Orders may be changed or cancelled at any time before the start of the course for a full refund. To cancel or change an order, email us at diving@gdi.org.
What if the dive gear I ordered does not fit?
- If gear does not fit the camper for any reason, we can immediately exchange it for a more appropriate size.
How will campers keep track of their dive gear?
- Once fit is ensured, we mark all items with the camper’s name in paint pen. Campers are assigned a labeled storage bin on the dive deck to store all their dive gear.
What if gear I purchased breaks at camp?
- We have had minimal instances of broken gear. However, items that break as a result of manufacturing defect will be repaired or replaced as appropriate. We do not replace gear damaged due to normal wear and tear or neglect.
Why do campers have to purchase personal gear for Scuba Classes?
-
We want students to become familiar with their dive gear in the early stages of their dive training. This familiarity carries over to confidence in their gear and competence in diving skills. Both are foundations for comfort in the water and lifelong diving. The bottom line is, we want kids to love diving, and proper gear is a huge part of getting them there.
